About Evergreen Islands

First organized back in 1971 to oppose putting an aluminum smelter on Guemes Island, the group reorganized in 1976 and was renamed "Evergreen Islands." Our focus since then has been to try to help assure the environmentally sensitive development of Fidalgo Island. The threat faced back in 1976 was the proposed clearcutting of lovely Hoypus Hill, at the northern end of Whidbey Island. Evergreen Islands successfully met that challenge and went on from there.

What We've Done Over the Years . . .
  • A model 35-year selective logging plan was developed for Hoypus Hill with the Department of Natural Resources - as a result of intervention by Evergreen Islands.
  • Fidalgo Island's beautiful Heart Lake was protected - after we promoted a land swap between the Department of Natural Resources and State Parks.
  • Proposed Ship Harbor development in Anacortes was redesigned into more environmentally acceptable dimensions - after intervention by Evergreen Islands.
  • Consultations with proponents of other projects on Fidalgo Island over the years have resulted in better understanding by the developers of the environmentally sensitive nature of these projects. In many cases, plans were modified, to the benefit of the local environment.
  • We worked closely with the City of Anacortes and the real estate community to develop a wetland protection ordinance acceptable to all parties.
Our Efforts Continue
  • Work is ongoing on such projects as establishing a cross Fidalgo Island trail and protecting Fidalgo Bay from unwise use and development.
  • We discuss with their proponents project on Fidalgo Island that have significant environmental impacts. The purpose is to educate the developers and to try to lessen those negative impacts.
  • In a new effort we're working with the real estate community to provide skilled consultation to new property owners who may be interested in keeping wildlife habitat in mind when developing a new piece of property.
Recognition for our Efforts

Although recognition is not our goal, Evergreen Island's work has not gone unrecognized. Three times over the years either the group as a whole or individual group leaders have been honored by receiving the Department of Ecology's Environmental Excellence Award.
