On Wednesday, May 22, the Skagit County Hearing Examiner denied the permit application for the Lake Erie Gravel Mine expansion on Fidalgo Island. The reason cited for the denial was failure of the applicant to provide the information required by the Board of County Commissioners. Neighbors of the mine feared increased erosion along the coastal bluffs and the possibility of a landslide. Approximately 60 people attended the day long hearing which included testimony from 3 geologists as well as Kyle Loring, attorney for Evergreen Islands.
